The story
Noodle in a Haystack is the realization of a singular vision: modern ramen made without compromise. Founded by self-taught couple Yoko and Clint, this San Francisco restaurant began as a Bay Area pop-up in 2015, fueled by a longing for the food, people, and connections they experienced in Japan. That passion carries through every bowl.
The ramen here is a true fusion of Californian and Japanese sensibilities. The menu changes regularly, but signature bowls like Shio Butter Clam, Yuzu Shio, and Tom Yum Paitan showcase the kitchen’s ability to balance clarity and depth. Broths are refined, noodles are precise, and toppings are handled with care. A tasting menu format allows guests to experience multiple expressions of their craft, often paired with a curated selection of sake.
The restaurant’s approach is personal. As the team writes, “It’s everything else – the people, the connections, the relationships, the love for what we do, it’s a piece of us.” That ethos extends to the dining room, where Yoko and Clint often work the front and back of house, creating an atmosphere that feels both welcoming and intentional.
The quality at Noodle in a Haystack has been widely recognized. The restaurant earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, following years of steady acclaim. Bon Appétit named it Best New Restaurant in America in 2023, and The Infatuation called it the Best Restaurant in San Francisco. The New York Times and LA Times have featured its “transcendent ramen,” and the team was a finalist in the World Ramen Grand Prix 2017. These honors are the result of uncompromising daily refinement – a commitment that shows in every bowl.
Yoko and Clint are now expanding with Mazé by Noodle in a Haystack, a new venture at Thrive City near the Chase Center. For now, their original location on Geary Boulevard remains one of the city’s most sought-after dining experiences – a place where a simple bowl of noodles becomes something deeply memorable.
