The story
Family-owned and operated since 2008, Los Agaves has become a defining presence in Santa Barbara’s dining scene. Carlos Luna opened the first location on Milpas Street, and the restaurant quickly earned a devoted following with its commitment to traditional, authentic, handmade cooking. The menu is rooted in the bold flavors of Mexico, prepared with high-quality ingredients and presented with a clean, sophisticated touch.
The cooking is contemporary Mexican, taking classic dishes and giving them an innovative twist. Signature plates include the Los Agaves Enchiladas, filled with fresh halibut and shrimp, red pepper, and onions, then topped with a smoky chipotle sauce. The Chiles Norteños stuff Poblano chiles with shrimp and Oaxaca cheese, finished with chipotle dressing. Several variations of ceviche are also a staple—fresh fish marinated in lime juice with onions, cilantro, and tomatoes, served on a crispy tostada with guacamole and avocado.
The restaurant’s recognition extends beyond local acclaim. Los Agaves has been named among Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. and has received a Michelin Recommended distinction, solidifying its reputation for quality. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, with outdoor seating available and wheelchair access. Multiple locations across Santa Barbara and beyond make it a reliable stop for anyone seeking authentic Mexican cuisine with a creative edge.
