The story
Judith is a new American tavern in the quiet wooded area of Sewanee, Tennessee, near the University of the South. It is the first solo project of James Beard Nominated Chef Julia Sullivan, whose cooking at Henrietta Red in Nashville earned her national recognition. The name honors Judith Ward Lineback, the first woman to matriculate at the university in 1969.
The restaurant occupies a warehouse-style building that was once the Old Steam Laundry, which serviced the university since the 1950s. The interior includes a bar area and additional rooms for private dining and parties. The goal is to become a meeting place for students, faculty, tourists, and the Sewanee community alike, offering warm hospitality in a convivial setting.
Judith’s seasonal menu features creative and approachable dishes, including a selection of small, shareable plates perfect for the bar crowd. The beverage program mirrors the food with accessible wines and a cocktail list created by Henrietta Red's Beverage Manager Patrick Halloran. The restaurant is open for dinner from Thursday through Monday.
Judith has been awarded a Michelin Recommended status, highlighting its refined American cuisine and warm, welcoming atmosphere. The recognition places it among a select group of restaurants across the country celebrated for consistent quality and genuine hospitality.
