The story

Lunch in Sewanee, TN – Michelin Recommended American Bakery & Seasonal Fare

A Community-Focused Kitchen on the Cumberland Plateau

When Lunch opened its doors in 2023, it did so with a clear vision: feed the community using ingredients grown and foraged by local people. Located at 24 University Avenue in Sewanee, Tennessee, this walk-in counter-service restaurant has quickly become a cornerstone of the town’s food scene. Its approach is rooted in seasonality—the menu changes weekly, sometimes daily, based on what is being harvested on and around the Cumberland Plateau. Alongside the weekly offerings, Lunch bakes fresh pastries daily and serves coffee and teas, while its market stocks dry goods, kitchen essentials, and a small selection of beer, wine, cheese, and house-made treats.

The Ethos Behind Every Dish

The team at Lunch is motivated by the hard work of local farmers and the rhythms of the seasons. They believe that if a community can feed itself, it can thrive. This sustainability ethic focuses on local people, local skills, and local materials. The meat and produce that arrive in the kitchen each week travel an average distance of just 5.6 miles from the restaurant. Lunch also grows many of its own ingredients at a market garden in Sewanee. All appropriate food waste is composted on that farm and used to grow the vegetables, herbs, and flowers that end up on diners’ tables. This commitment to limiting environmental impact, supporting local farmers, and cultivating a sense of place is at the heart of everything they do.

What to Expect When You Visit

Lunch is a walk-in establishment with no reservations and no telephone. Diners are encouraged to stop by and order directly with a team member. The space is designed to be cozy and welcoming for all. Because of the small team and kitchen, and the dedication to limiting waste and sourcing locally, the menu is in constant rotation. Popular dishes may sell out—a sign of a kitchen that cooks what is fresh and available rather than trying to please everyone with a static list. In addition to the daily counter service, Lunch hosts weekly community events, monthly ticketed dinners, cooking classes, and private events. The next ticketed dinner is scheduled for July 18, 2026.

A Michelin-Recommended American Bakery

In 2026, Lunch earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition that aligns perfectly with its philosophy of making beautiful food from thoughtfully sourced ingredients. The cuisine is American, with a strong bakery component—the pastries are a highlight of the daily menu. Whether you stop in for a morning coffee and a freshly baked treat, a leisurely lunch built around what the farmers brought in that week, or one of the special evening events, Lunch offers a genuine taste of Sewanee’s land and community.
