The story
Chef BT Nguyen’s love of cooking began in her native Vietnam. As a child, she spent hours in her family’s kitchen, watching relatives prepare the simple yet elegant dishes that became the foundation of her cuisine. Her ability to blend and balance flavors, fragrances, textures, and colors has been chronicled in Bon Appetit, Travel & Leisure, and on The Food Network’s “Emeril’s Florida.” At Bistro BT in Tampa, she brings that sensibility to a menu that fuses French and Vietnamese traditions.
The restaurant describes itself as “a small French restaurant serving modestly priced, home style meals, wine and coffee” – a French-Vietnamese bistro that aims to be a casual, family spot in South Tampa. You can drop in for a quick bite, a leisurely lunch or dinner, or order takeout. The space is designed as a compromise between more elegant dining and a quick-service counter, with both air-conditioned indoor seating and an outdoor patio.
The dinner menu features French classics like Coq Au Vin and Duck Confit alongside Vietnamese staples such as Bun, Pho, and Banh Mi sandwiches. Appetizers include Vietnamese Fresh Rolls (rice paper filled with lettuce, rice noodles, herbs, and bean sprouts, served with chili-peanut dipping sauce), Smoked Duck Bruschetta, and Homemade Vietnamese Crispy Spring Rolls made with pork, tree ear mushrooms, and taro root. Main courses range from a Bistro Grass-Fed Burger with Dijon and Maggi soy aioli to bento box-style plates like Galangal Chicken with turmeric rice, Bistro Shaken Beef with tenderloin and ratatouille, and Salmon Ponzu with ponzu sauce. Every dish uses pesticide-free and hormone-free produce and proteins.
Bistro BT has earned a place in the Michelin Guide, a nod to the consistency and care that Chef Nguyen brings to her French-Vietnamese fusion. It’s a recognition that aligns with the restaurant’s philosophy: straightforward, well-made food in a setting that feels both welcoming and refined.
