The story
Cariño is a Spanish word that translates to “love” or “affection.” That sentiment runs through every detail of this intimate Uptown restaurant, from the deeply personal décor to the carefully composed plates. The space, originally home to Brass Heart, was reimagined by chef-owner Norman Fenton and co-owner Karen Young as a love letter to the Latin American flavors and cultures that shaped Fenton’s career.
Fenton’s path to Cariño began in Detroit, led through the Alinea Group at The Aviary and Schwa, where he rose to chef de cuisine and maintained a Michelin star. In 2019, he embarked on a nine-month road trip from Chicago to Mexico, drawing inspiration from Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Michoacán before landing in Tulum. There, he met Young, who owned WILD Tulum, and the two later partnered to open Cariño in December 2023. Within its first year, the restaurant earned a Michelin star—a recognition the team considers a proud achievement.
The menu is a Latin-inspired tasting menu built on both traditional and contemporary techniques. Dishes evolve with the seasons, but recent offerings include an Aguachile with Ora King salmon, cucumber, and jalapeño; a Ravioli filled with huitlacoche, sweet corn, and truffle; and a Tostada layered with tartare, al pastor, and pineapple. The beverage program, led by director Ray Medina, focuses on agave spirits and Mexican beers, with inventive mocktail pairings that mirror the creativity of the food.
The setting is small and intimate, with counter dining and a chef’s table that let guests watch the kitchen in action. Every detail, from the music to the service, aims to create an atmosphere where guests and staff alike feel free to be themselves—a place built on authenticity and shared enthusiasm for the craft.
