The story
Kie-Gol-Lanee brings the earthy, vibrant cooking of Oaxaca to two Chicago neighborhoods. The name itself comes from the team’s hometown, Santa María Quiegolani, a small highland village. After moving to Chicago in 2004, the founders spent years working in Italian kitchens before opening their own restaurant in September 2016. Since 2020, they have earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand five consecutive times—a recognition of excellent food at moderate prices that fits their philosophy of generous, accessible hospitality.
The menu draws directly from Oaxacan traditions: slow-cooked moles, handmade tamales oaxaqueños, tlayudas loaded with beans and cheese, ceviches bright with citrus, and chapulines (grasshoppers) for the adventurous. A Cornish hen often appears, roasted with care. The kitchen also caters well to vegetarian and gluten-free diets—options are clearly marked and plentiful. Drinks feature mezcal cocktails and a lineup of aguas frescas, including a squash cooler called chilacayota that you won’t find elsewhere. For brunch, the weekend menu adds its own spin on classics.
Both locations—the original on Sheridan Road in Uptown and a second outpost on Diversey Avenue in Logan Square—share a warm, unpretentious vibe. Staff greet regulars by name, and the dining rooms feel like an extension of someone’s home. Outdoor seating is available when weather permits. Above the Uptown space, a private upper level hosts intimate gatherings and parties. The team also offers full catering, so the flavors of Oaxaca can travel beyond the restaurant walls.
The Michelin Bib Gourmand is awarded for “good quality, good value cooking,” and Kie-Gol-Lanee earns it year after year by delivering food that is both authentic and approachable. The moles are deep and layered, the tamales are tender, and the service never feels rushed. This is cooking rooted in family recipes, not trends. The steady recognition from Michelin simply confirms what the regulars already know: at Kie-Gol-Lanee, the food tastes like home.
