The story

Anju: Contemporary Korean Restaurant in Washington, DC | Michelin Recommended

Anju is a contemporary Korean restaurant and pub in Washington, DC’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, bringing together old traditions and new concepts. The restaurant is a concept by The Fried Rice Collective, the group founded by chefs Danny Lee and Scott Drewno, and is led day-to-day by Executive Chef Angel Barreto. The team’s deep expertise and vision have earned Anju a Michelin Recommended designation, a testament to its refined yet welcoming approach to Korean cuisine.

A Heritage of Flavor

Anju’s story is rooted in family and collaboration. Chef Danny Lee, who previously opened Mandu—DC’s first full-service Korean restaurant—partnered with Chef Scott Drewno to create a space that honors Korean culinary traditions while pushing them forward. The menu draws from both traditional and modern aspects of Korean culture, described by the restaurant as “a sophisticated amalgam of traditional Korean flavors and modern cooking techniques.” The result is a menu that feels both familiar and surprising, offering an array of Korean cuisine in a modern home-style setting.

The Space and Atmosphere

The restaurant offers two distinct dining experiences. The spacious downstairs bar is ideal for casual outings and walk-in seating, while the upstairs dining room provides a more intimate setting for a focused meal. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, complementing the eclectic menu. Anju also features outdoor seating and offers brunch on weekends, alongside a regular dinner service with a tasting menu option.

A Drink Program with Spirit

Anju’s bar program is as thoughtful as its food. The drink menu highlights Korean spirits, including house-infused soju and makgeolli, alongside creative cocktails like the Seoul Fashioned and the Anju-Rita. The wine list is carefully curated, with an emphasis on bottles that pair well with spicy dishes, and a notable selection of Korean-American wines from Oregon. The beverage program elevates the dining experience, making the bar a destination in its own right.

With its blend of tradition and innovation, Anju has become a cornerstone of the DC dining scene, recognized by the Michelin Guide for its consistent quality and compelling vision.
