The story
At the corner of Upshur Street and Rock Creek Road in Washington DC’s Petworth neighborhood, Hitching Post has been bringing together friends and family since 1967. This family-friendly gem describes itself as serving fresh southern flavors and beyond, and the menu reflects that generous spirit.
Step in and you’ll find a place where you can play your favorite tunes on the jukebox, enjoy a drink at the bar, and settle in for a relaxed meal. Happy Hour runs daily — Monday through Thursday from 3 to 6 pm, and Friday through Sunday from 11:30 am to 3 pm. The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, exactly what a neighborhood spot should be.
The menu is broad and comforting. Start with a crispy spinach salad with sweet yogurt-tamarind sauce, or mango jumbo shrimp with mango puree and pickled spices. For sandwiches, the Atomic Burger brings the heat with bacon, cooked onions, celery, pickles, and spices, while the HP Burger is a straightforward classic. Crispy or grilled chicken, catfish or whiting, crabcake, and pulled pork with slaw and fries round out the options.
Entrees include seafood curry with shrimp, catfish, and rice; chicken and waffles; fried or grilled pork chop; and three-piece fried chicken (all white or mixed). Blackened catfish, grilled lamb chops, and whole bronzino with two sides are also available. The portions are generous, the cooking is honest.
Hitching Post’s consistent quality and value caught the attention of the Michelin guide, which awarded it a Bib Gourmand in 2026 — a designation for good quality, good value cooking. It’s a fitting nod to a restaurant that has been a steady presence in the neighborhood for over half a century.
Whether you’re stopping in for a weekday lunch or a weekend dinner, Hitching Post delivers fresh, satisfying food in a setting that feels like home.
