The story
In the heart of Da Nang, at 253 Nguyen Hoang Street, Bánh Canh Yến has become a local institution, earning a Michelin Recommended nod for its unwavering dedication to a single, perfect bowl of bánh canh cá lóc. This is street food at its most honest: a thick, chewy tapioca noodle soup starring fresh snakehead fish, served in a deeply savoury broth.
The star of the show is the cá lóc (snakehead fish). Filleted into generous, thick slices, the fish is marinated until it’s flavourful and firm, never mushy. The broth is rich and umami-packed, a perfect complement to the satisfyingly dense noodles. Regulars know to add a side of crispy fried dough sticks (quẩy) and a spoonful of crunchy fried pork fat (tóp mỡ) for texture. The house-made chả cua (crab cake) is another standout—soft, fragrant, and far superior to the imitation versions found elsewhere.
The menu is straightforward and affordable, with bowls starting at just 15,000 VND. You can customise your order with extras like fish innards, pork bone, or a soft-boiled egg. The service is brisk and no-frills, a reflection of the constant flow of hungry customers. The shop operates in two shifts: morning from 06:00 to 13:00, and evening from 15:00 to 22:00.
This is a place where the quality of the food speaks for itself. The Michelin inspectors recognised what locals have known for years: Bánh Canh Yến delivers a bowl of bánh canh that is both a comforting daily meal and a genuine taste of Da Nang’s culinary heritage.
