The story
In Vietnamese, gia is the first syllable of gia đình – family. It is the name co-founders Sam Tran and Long Tran chose for their Hanoi restaurant, a reflection of the ethos that runs through every course. Sam Tran is head chef; Long Tran oversees operations. Together they built Gia on a shared belief in Vietnamese cuisine, drawing inspiration from the depth of traditional cooking and the country’s cultural heritage.
In 2026, Gia was awarded a Michelin star, a recognition of its high-quality cooking. The accolade comes naturally to a kitchen that treats Vietnamese cuisine not as a subject for reinvention but as a living tradition to be honored and explored. As the restaurant’s website states, “culture is the soul of cuisine.” Every detail – from table settings to the stories behind each dish – is designed to bring Vietnamese culture to life.
Gia’s tasting menus change with the seasons, each one carrying a distinct theme. The current menu, Artery of Identity (2025), explores the currents that shape Vietnamese cuisine. Previous menus include Inside the River (2024), which traces the Red River’s influence on Hanoi’s food, and Golden Forest, Silver Sea, a tribute to Vietnam’s natural abundance. Earlier menus like Cỗ Bàn reimagined a traditional Vietnamese feast, while Nhà celebrated family – the very idea behind Gia’s name.
The dinner tasting menu (3,300,000 VND++) leads with prawn and white tea, moves through swordfish with rice, flower crab with spring vegetables, and finishes with apricot and coconut. A shorter lunch menu (2,500,000 VND++) mirrors the same progression, both built around Vietnamese ingredients and seasonal produce. Wine pairings, including a non-alcoholic option, are available.
The restaurant’s atmosphere draws on the same philosophy. “It’s more than a meal,” its site reads. “It’s a homecoming.” Warm, unhurried, and precise, Gia invites diners to experience Vietnamese cuisine as a generous act of sharing – a meal that feels like being welcomed into someone’s home.
