The story
Since 1975, Hồng Phát has been a fixture in Saigon’s culinary landscape. Founded by Chef Nguyet Đang, the restaurant has served generations of diners with a consistent, beloved recipe for Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang. This is the dish that made its name: a clear, sweet broth filled with minced pork, small shrimp, and uniquely textured rice noodles and pork, as regulars note. Over five decades, the kitchen has refined its craft, earning Hồng Phát a loyal local following and, in recent years, a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide for good quality, good value cooking.
While Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang remains the cornerstone, the menu explores Vietnamese-Chinese comfort food with care. The hủ tiếu đồ biển upgrades the classic with live black tiger prawns, Nha Trang squid, homemade fish cake, and Japanese scallops. Another standout is the chả giò tôm cua – crispy spring rolls stuffed with shrimp and crab, served with fresh herbs and sweet-sour fish sauce, a dish highlighted by Michelin. For something heartier, the nui bò lúc lắc features imported beef seared in French butter, paired with tomato-sauce macaroni. And no meal feels complete without one of their bánh bao, steamed buns made in the old Saigon-Chợ Lớn style.
The dining room is clean, bright, and air-conditioned, with a spacious feel that welcomes both quick lunches and relaxed dinners. Service is attentive and warm – staff are known for their friendly, enthusiastic manner, often guiding first-timers to the dry version of the hủ tiếu. It’s a place where a 50-year legacy meets everyday hospitality, offering a genuine taste of Saigon’s culinary heritage.
