The story
Casa Vigil is the gastronomic heart of Alejandro Vigil’s Universe—a place where contemporary cuisine and winemaking meet a deeply personal vision. Located in the Maipú wine region of Mendoza, Argentina, the restaurant earned its Michelin star in 2026 for high-quality cooking that is as thoughtful as it is evocative. Every detail here flows from one central inspiration: Dante Alighieri’s Divina Comedia.
Alejandro Vigil, a celebrated winemaker, traces the idea back to his childhood. His maternal grandfather, Tristán, an Italian immigrant, would recite verses of the Divina Comedia to him. Those memories of nature, study, and family shaped Vigil’s worldview. Together with his family—including chef María Sance—he built Casa Vigil as a homage to that inheritance, translating the poem’s journey through Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise into a tangible, sensory experience.
The restaurant itself is a physical incarnation of Dante’s epic. The Inferno is a vast, subterranean wine cellar lined with barrels and an art installation by Osvaldo Chiavazza. A figure of the Virgen de la Carrodilla, by artist Sergio Roggerone, guides guests through tunnels into the Purgatorio—a passage of sculptures and reflection. Finally, the Paraíso awaits above: a dining room flooded with light, coloured glass, and the scent of the surrounding vineyard. Here, María Sance and Alejandro Vigil welcome guests for what they describe as “a banquet of local flavours”—contemporary cuisine paired with the estate’s wines, meant to be shared with those closest to you.
While the menu changes with the seasons and the bounty of Mendoza, the philosophy remains constant: honest, ingredient-driven contemporary dishes that reflect the place and the poetry that inspired them. The Michelin inspectors recognized this harmony of setting, technique, and emotion. A meal at Casa Vigil is not just dinner; it is an immersion into a personal universe where every bite and every glass tells a story.
