The story
Yellow introduces botanical cuisine to Sydney's Potts Point district, transforming vegetables into precise artistic plates. Founders Brent Savage and Nick Hildebrandt launched the restaurant in 2013 to address a rising interest in vegetarian dining, handing the reins to Sander Nooij in 2024. Nooij guides the kitchen toward a six-course format that integrates native Australian ingredients like saltbush and tamarind with rigorous seasonal sourcing. The team sustains this approach through direct partnerships with local farms, prioritizing environmental care and ingredient transparency in every service.
The dinner service unfolds through a structured sequence that balances delicate flavors with substantial textures. Early courses present capsicum consomme finished with black garlic oil and roasted palm heart accompanied by fennel cream. Mid-menu selections build complexity with dishes such as celeriac paired with hemp seeds and pickled pear, followed by eggplant cooked with emmer wheat and caper. Later courses highlight Japanese pumpkin with sesame and native tamarind, while desserts conclude the meal featuring local figs with pistachio and sumac or Jerusalem artichokes served with plum and spiced granita. Each preparation emphasizes distinct ingredient interactions over heavy sauces.
Situated at 57 MacLeay Street near Kings Cross, the venue offers accessible dining close to public transport links. Yellow holds a four-radish rating from the We're Smart Green Guide for 2026, reflecting its ongoing commitment to sustainability and ethical procurement. This acknowledgment mirrors the kitchen's reliance on Australian produce and waste-conscious operations. Evening guests can also stop by during happy hour on Fridays and Saturdays for wines and craft beers, plus small bites like lions mane katsu sando or smoked carrot skewers. The environment remains focused on culinary integrity throughout the week.
