The story

Glückskind Restaurant in Flachau | Modern Austrian Cuisine & Gault&Millau Recognition

A Regional Kitchen with Creative Focus

Glückskind in Flachau serves a refined version of modern Austrian cuisine, anchored by chef Christian Neureiter’s focus on seasonal local produce. The kitchen balances traditional Alpine ingredients with precise technical execution, a method that recently earned the establishment thirteen and a half points in the Gault&Millau guide. Wolfgang Weitgasser works alongside him as sous chef, maintaining consistency across the daily service while Mara Mooslechner manages front-of-house operations. This coordinated approach allows the team to present complex flavor combinations without sacrificing clarity on the plate.

Signature Plates and Seasonal Twists

Smoked trout arrives accompanied by a light potato buttermilk espuma that establishes a crisp foundation for the meal. Beetroot carpaccio follows, layered with grilled goat cheese and caramelized walnuts to create a sharp contrast between earthy sweetness and charred acidity. This approach to Austrian cooking occasionally transforms familiar staples into distinctive courses, such as a truffle noodle dish paired with red beet and sour cherry. Venison loin finished with heritage carrot purée and wild berries concludes the savory progression before a blackberry tart provides a restrained finish.

Distinct Dining Spaces

Guests navigate between three themed rooms designed to accommodate different pacing styles throughout the evening. The Runenstube rests near the main entrance and features a wall panel decorated with protective runes, offering a quiet environment for early arrivals. Behind the service counter lies the Glücksstube, where low bench seating encourages relaxed conversation while soft background music fills the space. A dedicated Weinstube displays rows of glass bottles along its perimeter, providing a social setting for wine flights and leisurely meals.

The Glückskind is a stroke of luck for Flachau. One would almost prefer to try the entire menu, there are so many imaginative dishes. The smoked trout with potato-buttermilk espuma is a fantastic start. The highlight of the evening is the beetroot carpaccio with grilled goat cheese and caramelized walnuts. Truffle pasta is common, but a creative and harmonious combination with beetroot and fine sour cherries is rare – this course could have used just a bit more truffle. The connection to the region is felt not least in the tender venison loin steak with heirloom carrot purée and berries. With the blackberry tart finale, the kitchen once again shows what it can do. Very warm and friendly service. Address: Flachauer Straße 284, 5542 Flachau, Austria. Contact: 06457 3354080, glueckskind@central-flachau.com, https://www.central-flachau.com/de/restaurant/.
