The story

Neugebauer in Althofen serves Carinthian Landhausküche from a family-run kitchen that values detail and heritage. Established in 1900, the restaurant now celebrates 125 years of tradition without letting history slow its creative pulse.

Tradition and the Kitchen

Chef Lothar Krings-Neugebauer steers the daily service, guiding a variable team through seasonal shifts and core classics. The family operates with a focus on holistic guest care, treating every plate as part of a larger commitment to quality. This approach allows the kitchen to honor old recipes while integrating new elements that keep the dining experience current. This dedication to quality and evolution has earned the restaurant a Gault&Millau rating of 12.5.

Regional Flavors and Innovations

Menu highlights include Neugebauer's classic Backhendl, sourced directly from Carinthian farms and breaded in organic eggs. This preparation pairs well with hand-made Kärntner Kasnudeln or grilled platters featuring local meats. Trout appears on the menu, cooked to highlight freshness from the region's waters. The list also features Kärntner Sushi, blending traditional techniques with domestic fish, alongside workshops where visitors learn the craft themselves.

Gardens and River Views

Guests dine near the Löllinger Bach, where a terrace offers a view of water flowing quietly past the building. A large garden surrounds the property, providing space for relaxation in warmer months. The layout supports different group sizes and occasions within these distinct areas. The setting reinforces the link between Carinthian cuisine and the surrounding nature, making the meal feel rooted in the local environment.

The Country Inn Neugebauer recently turned 125 years old. However, they do not rest on their traditions. Instead, these traditions are incorporated daily into the delicious and time-honored dishes: "Neugebauer's classic fried chicken" from Carinthian farms, breaded in organic eggs and breadcrumbs, served with either parsley potatoes or fried potatoes, is one of the highlights. Additionally, the menu features homemade Carinthian cheese dumplings, grill platters, trout, and much more. Special offering: "Carinthian Sushi" made from locally caught fish and sushi courses.
