The story

Safenhof in Bad Waltersdorf: Refined East Styrian Cooking Since 1992

The Chef and the Kitchen

Safenhof in Bad Waltersdorf delivers refined East Styrian cuisine that balances tradition with precise seasonal technique. The property has carried the national Hauben quality seal since nineteen ninety two, reflecting Chef Christa Wimberger’s focus on local ingredients. Her kitchen adjusts classic preparations to suit contemporary palates without losing their grounded character, earning thirteen points from the Gault&Millau guide this year. Wimberger oversees every service alongside Maitre Gertrud Weinhofer, keeping pacing synchronized throughout the evening.

Seasonal Plates and Regional Flavors

The menu builds around solid protein foundations and careful carbohydrate work, beginning with roasted lamb rack finished in rosemary and local sea salt. Housemade truffle tagliolini appears alongside earthy mushrooms, while slow braised beef tenderloin rests on a reduction of brown wine and juniper. A crisp arugula salad carries marinated Riesling shrimp, offering a bright counterpoint to richer courses. Each plate demonstrates how straightforward ingredients gain depth through controlled heat and patient reduction.

A Terrace Overlooking the Safen River

Guests arrive at a sunlit terrace positioned directly above the Safen stream, which originally lent the building its name. Inside, the main dining room centers around a massive tiled stove that radiates steady warmth during cooler months. Wine selections draw heavily from the nearby Vulkanland region, where volcanic soils produce crisp whites that match the kitchen’s emphasis on clean acidity. This combination of landscape and architecture supports traditional Austrian cooking in a setting that feels both rooted and quietly refined.

The Safenhof in Eastern Styria serves excellent traditional home-style cuisine. The aperitif is served on the terrace overlooking the Safen River in front of the house – the river once gave the inn its name. Afterwards, guests retire to the cozy parlor with its large tiled stove. Rack of lamb, homemade truffle tagliolini, beef tenderloin, and porcini mushroom risotto are all executed superbly. Guests also appreciate venturing beyond local fare – for instance, with the refreshing arugula salad featuring tiger prawns or the creamy mango panna cotta to conclude the meal. The wine selection is predominantly drawn from the Vulkanland region. Address: Hauptstraße 78, 8271 Bad Waltersdorf, Austria. Contact: 03333 22 39, info@safenhof.at, https://www.safenhof.at/.
