The story
Wirtshaus zur Sonne in Glottertal has maintained its reputation for authentic Badische cuisine across three and a half centuries of continuous family operation. Johann Michael Beha assumed the role in 1722, passing the establishment down through generations to the current Dilger family who took the helm in 1980. Johannes Dilger now carries forward this lineage within walls that witnessed the filming of the famous television series Schwarzwaldklinik during the 1980s. The kitchen draws heavily on local resources, preparing wild game from nearby hunts and utilizing fresh herbs gathered directly from the Glottertal landscape.
Guests settle into an original wood-paneled peasant room warmed by a classic tiled stove, creating a setting that feels preserved rather than staged. The authenticity of this environment earned the inn two-and-a-half ladles from the Schlemmer Atlas, a rating that reflects the genuine care poured into every detail. Large windows frame views of the Black Forest heights while the adjacent sun terrace offers seating beneath striped awnings overlooking the vine-draped slopes of the Glottertal. The layout balances intimate corners for quiet conversation with open spaces that accommodate the lively energy of weekend gatherings.
The menu highlights staples like hand-scrubbed spätzle and slow-braised Sunday roast, alongside daily changing lunch options featuring fresh fish and vegetable variations. A four-course surprise menu available by reservation showcases the breadth of the kitchen's repertoire, ranging from hearty meat dishes to lighter seasonal preparations. Ingredients remain central to the experience, with the team emphasizing home-style cooking methods that honor the robust flavors of the region. This commitment to substance ensures the Badische cooking served here remains grounded and satisfying for every guest.
