The story

Sarah kocht in Egg blends regional Austrian cuisine with urban precision

The Kitchen and Its Creators

Sarah kocht in Egg offers a grounded version of regional Austrian cuisine that balances everyday comfort with precise technique. Sarah Brückner founded this establishment after apprenticing alongside several of Vorarlberg’s most respected cooks. She runs the kitchen alongside head chef Florian Isenberg and sous chef Aline Ritter, maintaining a philosophy they describe as urban regional crossovers. This steady commitment to honest plating recently earned the kitchen 12.5 points from Gault&Millau, a rating that reflects the consistent quality rather than fleeting trends.

Seasonal Plates and Signature Preparations

Guests often begin with a chilled beetroot tartare followed by a smooth cauliflower soup finished with bright lemon oil. The main courses rotate between slow braised Bœuf bourguignon and a crisp green bean salad paired with tender beef slices and fresh horseradish. A rich gnocchi preparation with spinach and walnuts rounds out the savory options before diners move to house baked desserts like traditional Topfenkrapfen. Each preparation in this Austrian cooking style reflects a straightforward respect for seasonal produce and clean textures.

The Village Setting and Wine Selection

The dining room occupies a restored nineteenth century post office marked by its distinctive slate roof and timber shingle exterior. Located near the center of Egg in the Bregenzerwald valley, the space functions as both a neighborhood gathering point and a refined destination for evening menus. Diners pair these plates with a curated list of Austrian natural wines sourced directly from the Hess family in Weinviertel and the Gsellmann estate in Mittelburgenland. The quiet architecture lets the local culinary style take center stage without distraction.

At the newly redesigned transit hub in the picturesque Bregenzerwald, hungry visitors are encouraged to stop by the "Sarah kocht" restaurant. The namesake, head chef, and owner Sarah Brückner opened an evening restaurant in the former post office building, a shingle-style structure that occasionally strikes one as rather grandiose, complete with a daily lunch menu and café service. The proprietress trained under some of Vorarlberg’s finest chefs, and it truly shows in the food. A hearty beetroot tartare is followed by a delicately balanced cauliflower soup with lemon oil, alongside equally excellent beef bourguignon and quark pastries.
