The story

Malerwinkl Fürstenfeld: Regional Austrian Cooking Meets Contemporary Art

Culinary philosophy

Malerwinkl in Fürstenfeld grounds its Styrian cuisine in straightforward sourcing rather than rigid labels. The kitchen prioritizes fair contracts with local growers. Guests may book a four-course surprise menu tailored to specific dietary preferences or follow the six-course degustation path. Transparency matters.

Seasonal flavors

Vegetables anchor the early courses. Bear garlic soup transitions into a firm risotto studded with wild morels and generous cheese portions. Main plates feature butter-soft pink lamb alongside pan-seared pike served with puntarelle and regional herbs. Desserts lean toward light textures. Coconut snow mushrooms paired with fresh mango close the meal.

Wine and pairing

The beverage program emphasizes nearby producers. Sommellerie staff curate selections that complement the shifting daily specials. This regional focus earned the venue a solid fifteen-and-a-half rating from Gault & Millau. Local harvests dictate the schedule.

Space and exhibition

Dining occurs inside a bright room decorated with contemporary artworks or out in the sheltered garden courtyard. The building functions as an art hotel and operates a dedicated wine shop on site. Visitors often pause to examine rotating sculpture exhibitions before ordering. Art and food share equal footing.

At Im Malerwinkl, you can dine either in the beautiful garden terrace or in the bright, modernly furnished dining room, which is also adorned with contemporary artworks. Starting with Vulcano ham, spreads, pickled vegetables, and homemade bread is highly recommended. The seasonal highlights, featuring wild garlic soup and al dente wild garlic risotto with morels and generous amounts of cheese, are equally excellent. Among the main courses, the butter-soft, pink-cooked lamb and the pike with puntarelle, Cima de Rapa, and Frigo di Sarda stand out. The coconut snow dumplings with mango offer a feather-light yet intensely flavored finale. The wine list, with its regional focus, is thoughtfully curated and a true pleasure. Even when fully booked, the service remains attentive and good-humored. Address: Hatzendorf 152, 8361 Fehring, Austria. Contact: 03155 22 53, office@malerwinkl.com, https://www.malerwinkl.com/.
