The story

Restaurant Leiten in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee offers refined Carinthian cuisine

The chef and the kitchen

At Restaurant Leiten in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, chef Leo Suppan guides a kitchen focused on Carinthian cuisine that treats regional produce with quiet precision. He arrived before the doors opened, managing daily service while building a menu that strips away excess to highlight what grows locally. Guests often linger over the Tauern rye risotto, where chewy grains meet wild mushrooms and a light alpine cheese foam. This grounded approach to regional Austrian cooking has earned steady recognition, including a fourteen point rating from Gault&Millau.

Roots in the soil

Sem Kegley and Georg Lexer planted their first vines on the southern slope of Ulrichsberg in 2005, gradually expanding to nearly ten hectares. Their gravity fed cellar, completed in 2012, moves wine without pumps, mirroring the kitchen’s preference for unhurried methods. Delivery notes from local farmers hang near the bar and appear directly on the menu, letting guests trace each ingredient back to its source. That same clarity shapes how they pair their estate grown whites and reds with every course.

Space and atmosphere

The property blends a formal fine dining room with a traditional Viennese wine tavern, giving visitors two distinct ways to experience the estate. Hosts Claudia, Matthias, and Lisa guide both spaces with unforced warmth, adjusting the pace whether you are seated at a polished table or a wooden counter. The open cellar layout hints at continuous growth, much like the Mangalica and Duroc pigs grazing nearby. Every detail feels deliberate, from the stone walls to the view toward the vineyards.

Carinthia offers not only breathtaking locations but also culinary highlights – such as at the idyllic Karnburg winery. Here, transparency is highly valued, as the delivery notes from local producers are not only displayed behind the counter but can also be found on the menu. Head chef Leo Suppan and his team transform these high-quality ingredients into a cohesive four- or six-course menu with a wow factor. A special highlight: the creamy Tauern rye risotto with mushrooms and airy mountain cheese foam – a true taste experience. Perfectly paired wines from their own vineyards are served alongside it. It’s just a shame that no one asked us if we wanted to take a bottle home. But we won’t give up and will definitely come back!
