The story

Soleo Krumpendorf: Italian Cooking Meets Carinthian Terroir

The Piedmont-born kitchen

At Soleo in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Italian cooking meets Carinthian terroir under the direction of Marco de Sanctis. He brings his culinary background from northern Italy alongside senior roles at Do&Co in Vienna and Madrid’s Villa Capri. His team blends that international training with a strict focus on regional produce. This Italian cuisine approach keeps the plates light yet deeply rooted in local seasonality.

Plates shaped by season and soil

Guests can order two tasting menus where every course appears individually on the regular list. The Fregola Sarda arrives with raw, sweet red prawns and creamy stracciatella, while a classic Carbonara draws steady attention during themed evenings. House-made pasta and fresh Carinthian fish rotate according to market availability. Citrus notes occasionally brighten traditional finishes like crème catalana.

A family estate overlooking the lake

Walter Frank opened the property in nineteen eighty-one, and his daughter Ines took over operations in twenty-twenty-three. She maintains the original priority of making visitors feel entirely at home. The terrace faces the Wörthersee and Karawanken mountains, framed by climbing roses and evening lighting. This steady hospitality aligns with their Slow Food certification and a recent 14.5-point Gault&Millau rating.

The fact that new head chef Marco de Sanctis has Italian roots is evident not only in the ingredients of his light, summery dishes, but also in themed menus such as From Rome with Love, featuring a pasta carbonara that deserves a prominent spot on social media for its visual appeal alone. Equally impressive is the fregola sarda served with raw, delicately sweet red shrimp and creamy stracciatella. The salmon trout is cooked to perfection. To finish on a high note: citrus fruits pair exceptionally well with crème catalana!
