The story

Gozzo Restaurant Review: Modern Fusion Cuisine in Historic Krems an der Donau

The kitchen and its philosophy

Gozzo brings its modern fusion cuisine to the heart of Krems an der Donau under the direction of chef Charly Teuschl. Since opening in 2018, the kitchen treats global flavors as raw material rather than rigid rules. Asian aromatics meet local Austrian produce across a menu that shifts between Southeast Asian broths, Mediterranean seafood preparations, and Central European classics. The approach favors balance over spectacle, letting ingredients speak through precise seasoning and straightforward technique.

Shared plates and tasting flights

Guests often begin with the Gozzo Experience, a guided flight where each service places two dishes at the center of the table for sharing. The Skipper delivers a trio of white fish alongside scallops, prawns, and a creamy risotto that recently earned recognition from Gault&Millau. The kitchen applies similar precision to every plate, proving that modern fusion cuisine thrives on shared moments rather than solitary plating. Smoked carp roe rests on potato foam while grilled cedar salmon arrives wrapped in sushi rice and mango salsa.

Stone arches and vaulted ceilings

The dining room occupies a fragment of the historic Gozzoburg, a structure whose foundations date back to 1275. Massive limestone walls and early Gothic windows frame tables set beneath original stone vaults. Medieval masonry meets contemporary lighting and clean wooden surfaces without overwhelming the space. Patrons eat inside a preserved monument while enjoying a menu that showcases how well fusion cuisine adapts to historic surroundings.

Old stone walls, stylish ambiance, and an interesting menu: ideal conditions for a successful evening. Unfortunately, the initial enthusiasm fades somewhat with the first course: a lángos with pecorino, muhammara, walnuts, and salad. Either the knife is too dull or your teeth are too weak: breaking down the lángos is quite a challenge. By contrast, the mildly spicy Thai glass noodle salad with calamari and prawns comes without flaw. This is followed by an extremely generously plated dish featuring three types of fish fillet (salmon, halibut, cod), scallops, prawns, and a perfect risotto. A dish that easily wins us back over, just like the halibut in an herb crust with pea and mint ravioli. Ultimately, it was a successful evening after all.
