The story

Prandtauerhof Gutshofrestaurant: Award-Winning Wachau Cuisine

The Kitchen and Its Chef

Prandtauerhof Gutshofrestaurant sits in Weißenkirchen in the Wachau valley, serving refined Austrian cuisine under chef Karin Irk. The Holzapfel family maintains this estate property as a genuine meeting place, combining traditional methods with modern precision. Their steady output earned fourteen points from Gault&Millau for 2026, a recognition built on reliable seasonal execution. Interior warmth comes from decorative work by Barbara Holzapfel, which keeps the dining rooms inviting year-round.

Signature Dishes and Ingredients

The preparation style reflects a broader commitment to Austrian cooking, building each plate around local produce. Wiener Backfleisch arrives as a substantial beef cheek slice cooked medium, resting beside pickled field cucumbers and parsley potatoes. Smoked biological salmon trout appears with a crisp fennel and apricot salad, while potato dumplings carry a wine leaf pesto and artichoke topping. All bread served at the table originates from the estate bakery.

Courtyard Dining and House Wines

Guests choose between the sunlit Arkadenhof courtyard and the classically furnished rooms depending on the weather. The cellar stocks the family’s own vineyard releases, offering accessible bottle prices and vintages tracing back to 2000. These regional selections pair seamlessly with every dish, reinforcing the restaurant’s dedication to authentic Austrian fare. The overall philosophy remains grounded in terroir, letting the Wachau harvest dictate both the glass and the plate.

The arcade courtyard is one of the most beautiful restaurant gardens in the Wachau, and thanks to the decorative flair of Barbara Holzapfel, you can also enjoy cozy indoor dining in winter. A permanent menu staple and a true benchmark is the Wiener Backfleisch: a thick sirloin steak cooked medium to perfection. Served with pickled garden cucumbers, parsley potatoes, and remoulade – absolutely delicious. Classics like stuffed mini peppers turn out wonderfully light, fresh, and with that certain seasonal touch. From the smoker comes the organic salmon trout with fennel-apricot salad, while the potato noodles are served with grape leaf pesto and artichokes; the bread is baked in-house. The estate wines are available – priced very fairly – dating all the way back to the 2000 vintage! Address: Prandtauerplatz 36, 3610 Weißenkirchen in der Wachau, Austria.
