The story

Winzerhaus Kogelberg in Leibnitz: South Styrian Wirtshaus Cuisine

The Nauschnegg Kitchen Philosophy

Winzerhaus Kogelberg in Leibnitz serves a grounded form of South Styrian cuisine, operating as a family enterprise managed by the Nauschnegg brothers. Their approach follows a guiding principle borrowed from Archduke Johann, which values steady tradition alongside careful experimentation. The kitchen prioritizes seasonal produce and straightforward preparation over unnecessary complexity. Their consistent output recently secured 13 points from Gault&Millau, a rating that tracks the steady quality of their regional kitchen.

Seasonal Plates and Local Techniques

The menu highlights regional fish and hearty staples executed with careful attention to texture and balance. A cured trout dish arrives in a rich beurre blanc sauce alongside a crisp crayfish salad and a slow-cooked hourglass egg. Savory pastries featuring beef tendon are paired with whipped celery foam to cut through the richness. Grilled lake trout steamed in paper rests atop a nutty barley risotto that absorbs the cooking juices completely.

Terrace Dining Above the Vineyards

The property sits directly above working vineyards, offering unobstructed sightlines toward the rolling Sulm Valley hills. Large stone tables provide ample space for groups gathering along the winding Silberbergweg. Mature walnut trees cast natural shade across the outdoor seating area during peak summer heat. The layout encourages unhurried meals where conversation takes precedence over rigid service schedules.

In southwestern Styria, there are indeed many beautiful viewpoints, but the recently revitalized Winzerhaus Kogelberg, operated by the Nauschnegg brothers (who also run the Alte Post in Leibnitz), offers not only a magnificent view towards the Sulm Valley hills, but also tables shaded by a large walnut tree on hot summer days. Alongside breaded fried chicken and other classics, the kitchen surprises with a refined St. Petersburg egg (marinated char in beurre blanc with river crayfish salad and a soft-boiled egg), delightfully crispy ox-tail dumplings with a deliciously creamy celery foam, as well as lake char en papillote accompanied by a flavorful pearl barley risotto. The by-the-glass wine selection, however, urgently needs improvement. Address: Silberbergweg 1, 8430 Leibnitz, Austria. Contact: 03452 20000 servus@winzerhaus.at https://www.winzerhaus.at/
