The story

Iglhauser Schlosshotel Dining in Mattsee, Austria | Gault&Millau Recognized

The Castle Grounds

Iglhauser Schlosshotel serves regional Austrian cuisine on the shores of Lake Mattsee in Salzburg, occupying a building that has hosted guests for over six centuries. What began as a medieval court tavern now operates as a refined castle restaurant surrounded by mature gardens. Guests dine overlooking the water while stepping into beautifully preserved rooms that retain their historic character. The setting remains quiet and grounded, offering a steady backdrop for daily meals and seasonal gatherings.

The Kitchen Approach

Anna Iglhauser guides the culinary direction with a clear emphasis on vegetables and fresh herbs grown locally. Alfred Zadrovic works alongside her as head chef and maitre, ensuring every plate meets consistent standards. This Austrian cuisine relies on straightforward techniques rather than heavy sauces or unnecessary garnishes. Seasonal produce moves directly from the garden into the kitchen, shaping menus that change with the weather.

Recognition and Table Details

The Gault&Millau guide awarded this dining room a score of twelve for its reliable execution and thoughtful pairing selections. Diners frequently return for the deeply layered beet soup and the aromatic spinach dumplings that anchor the lunch menu. Pike and perch arrive simply prepared, while roasted venison provides a richer option during colder months. Families and regulars appreciate the warm service style and the well-stocked wine list that complements these regional plates without overshadowing them.

A picturesque setting for a meal – for over 600 years. The former court tavern has evolved into a castle restaurant featuring magnificent parlors along with a garden overlooking the lake. Here, Anna Iglhauser presides with her vegetable and herb-driven cuisine. The beet soup is rich and deep, while the spinach dumplings are bursting with flavor. Whether pike or zander, the fish dishes are consistently excellent. So is the pan-fried venison. Followed by lemon sorbet or apricot crepes. Flawless! The menus offer great value, the service is warm and personal, and the wine list features a delightful selection. This is how you enjoy life, at the castle by the lake.
