The story

Lackner: Lakeside Dining in Mondsee | WattAFork

A focused approach to regional cooking

Guests arriving at Lackner in Mondsee quickly notice how the kitchen grounds its Austrian cuisine in local seasonal rhythms. Chef Martin Lackner directs the service alongside maitre d’ Manuela Gsenger, maintaining a steady pace across the dining room. Their menu reflects a straightforward philosophy where technique supports the ingredients rather than overshadowing them. This clear direction earned the establishment a thirteen point rating from Gault&Millau.

Seasonal plates from the lake and fields

Regional Austrian cooking highlights produce harvested directly from the property’s raised garden beds. Staff still pluck cress and capers near the terrace before they reach the pass. Proteins anchor the main courses, starting with beef tartare sourced from Hausruck cattle and followed by fillet from Mondsee reinanke. These preparations pair with smooth potato cream, wild porcini mushrooms, and wilted spinach.

Lakeside terraces and mountain backdrops

Outdoor seating sits beside the water while tall lemon trees line the gravel walkway leading inward. Diners often pause to hear reeds rustle against the shore during afternoon service. Classic Austrian menus close with lighter finishes like chocolate flan featuring a soft center. Many guests eventually trade the plated dessert for apricot dumplings served with farmer’s cheese instead.

With a view of the mountains, you can hear the reeds by the lake rustling here on the terrace. The Lackner is beautifully situated directly on Lake Mondsee; right in front of the terrace, nasturtiums are still being cut from the hotel’s own raised beds before service, while lemon trees line the gravel path. The beef tartare from Hausruck cattle as a starter is finely seasoned and lovingly presented, and the filet of Mondsee reindeer is cooked to perfection. The kitchen serves it alongside delicious potato purée, porcini mushrooms, and fresh spinach. The chocolate flan to finish comes across as almost a bit heavy – served more like a cake with a soft center – on the table, accompanied by flambéed pineapple and banana that are quite sweet. Next time, we would alternatively go for the apricot dumplings with farmer’s cheese instead!
