The story

Gasthof Schäffer Mürzzuschlag: Traditional Austrian Cuisine Meets Family Warmth

The Kitchen and Regional Craft

Gasthof Schäffer in Mürzzuschlag anchors its menu firmly in Austrian cuisine, drawing directly from the surrounding Mürzer Oberland nature park. Thomas Schäffer leads the kitchen alongside his wife Karolin, treating every ingredient as a local resource rather than a commodity. This grounded approach earned the establishment a Gault&Millau score of 14, which noted the steady quality behind their daily lunch service. The team prepares meals that respect seasonal availability while maintaining a disciplined technique.

Signature Dishes and Seasonal Details

The lunch roster frequently features Tafelspitzsulzerl noodles finished with rich reductions and seasonal vegetables. Guests can also order a Bouillabaisse style fish broth containing river prawns, mussels, Saibling trout, and pan fried trout liver. A classic beef roulade appears regularly, cooked until the meat yields easily against a dark gravy. Evening tables can request surprise tasting menus, allowing the traditional guesthouse kitchen to rotate whatever arrives fresh from local suppliers.

The Dining Room and Hospitality

The building sits adjacent to the historic Neuberger Münster, offering quiet views toward the valley and forested hills. Karolin Schäffer manages the floor with a straightforward service style that prioritizes comfort over ceremony. Tables are arranged to allow easy conversation without feeling cramped. A carefully curated wine list complements the regional cooking, rounding out an evening that feels both structured and relaxed.

If you feel even the slightest hint of appetite or actual hunger while traveling over the Semmering Pass, the Gasthof Schäffer is the perfect solution. Located just a short distance from the Neuberg Monastery, this historic establishment offers not only a crisp wine list and attentive service, but also high-quality traditional pub cuisine during the day and special surprise menus available upon advance reservation in the evening. During our recent lunch visit, we were delighted by richly garnished and flavorful Tafelspitz Sulzerl (boiled beef pasta parcels), a Bouillabaisse-style fish soup featuring vegetables, shrimp, mussels, Arctic char, and baked char liver, alongside a classic beef roulade just like Grandma used to make. A fitting finale to conclude the meal: hand-rolled blackberry strudel served with roasted blackberries and vanilla ice cream … and onward we go!
