The story

La Terrasse Pörtschach: Refined Austrian Cuisine Overlooking Lake Wörthersee

The Chef and the Kitchen

La Terrasse in Pörtschach am Wörthersee anchors its modern Austrian cuisine around the steady direction of Chef Richard Hessl. He sources roughly eighty percent of his ingredients within a seventy kilometer radius, ensuring that produce arrives at peak ripeness. His nearly decade-long tenure at Schloss Seefels has cultivated a kitchen culture built on consistency rather than constant reinvention. This steady hand earned the restaurant fifteen points in the latest Gault&Millau guide, a recognition that praises his willingness to challenge conventional dining expectations.

Signature Preparations

The menu frequently revisits traditional Austrian cooking while introducing unexpected layerings like miso and fermentation. An amuse-bouche featuring baked beans leads into a tender braised lamb neck, both demonstrating how familiar flavors can be elevated through careful cooking times. Spring menus highlight an asparagus cream soup enriched with fermented vegetables and a small baked duck knödel that adds savory depth. Main courses often showcase the Filet Wellington paired with smooth pea cream and a concentrated paprika jam, followed by a raspberry dessert finished with chilled pistachio cream.

The Dining Space

Natural light floods the glass-fronted dining area during evening service, framing uninterrupted views across the water toward the mountains. The interior palette relies on bordeaux, chamois, pink, and terracotta tones to keep attention fixed on the table itself. A dedicated wine climate room stores seven hundred bottles alongside the main seating zone, allowing guests to browse selections without leaving the floor. Morning visitors arrive on custom Augarten porcelain plates that complement the restrained elegance of the architecture.

The fantastic view of Lake Wörthersee is by no means the only reason to visit La Terrasse. Chef Richard Hessl not only knows his craft, but he also masterfully plays with expectations. Baked beans as an amuse-bouche? Does that even work in a venue like this? Absolutely, and the tenderly braised lamb neck takes it to the next level. The asparagus cream soup elevates the classic to a completely new level with miso and fermented asparagus, and the baked duck dumpling within it is a fantastic complement. The finest cuts of lamb are served as a distinctively presented Filet Wellington, brilliantly paired with pea cream and a pepper jam. Simply labeled "Raspberry," the dessert is also a true highlight: fruity raspberry milk ice cream with heavenly pistachio cream.
