The story

Gasthof Mohren in Rankweil Celebrates Generations of Regional Austrian Cuisine

The kitchen and the ingredients

Gasthof Mohren in Rankweil delivers a grounded approach to regional Austrian cuisine that has earned lasting respect from critics and locals alike. Head chef Jessica Summer steers the program at this family-run establishment, building on generations of Vorarlberg hospitality. The team prioritises produce harvested within an eighty kilometre radius, applying a nose-to-tail philosophy to every protein. This consistent dedication recently secured a twelve-point-five rating from Gault&Millau, reflecting how the cuisine rewards honest preparation.

Signature plates on the menu

Diners often begin with capuns, which feature Swiss chard leaves wrapped around a filling of spaetzle dough and smoked sausage. The main course frequently turns to the Mohrenspieß, a structured skewer combining veal, beef, and pork alongside a vibrant lecsó sauce and glazed vegetables. Other notable preparations include creamy wild garlic strigoli and slow-cooked venison ragout that draw directly from traditional Alpine pantries. Each dish relies on precise technique rather than heavy styling to let the regional ingredients speak.

Dining spaces and heritage

The interior balances cosy dining rooms with a brighter modern restaurant area that frames distant views of the Swiss mountains. Guests can also reserve tables in a century-old wine cellar or step into the adjacent cottage garden during warmer months. The property maintains a rigorous sustainability framework that tracks food waste and partners with local suppliers to meet environmental targets. This blend of historic architecture and practical operations keeps the focus squarely on the meal itself.

As long as anyone can remember, it has been called the Mohren. And for just as long, the Mohren has served solid, classic hearty cuisine at a consistently excellent standard. We recommend starting right away with the Beef Tartare from Giesinger cattle, served with Grana Padano. Simply outstanding. Or the phenomenal Capuns. Chard leaves stuffed with spätzle dough and Kaminwurzen. Well, that isn't exactly the most traditional home-style cooking, but then there's the Mohren skewer made from veal, beef, and pork. Served with exemplary letscho, glazed vegetables, and "devil sauce." While not exactly fine dining, its sinful heartiness makes it a dream. Address: Stiegstraße 17, 6830 Rankweil, Austria.
