The story
Knappenhof in Reichenau an der Rax redefines Austrian alpine cooking through its mountain setting and historic roots. Hotelière Helena Ramsbacher restored this former summer retreat in twenty twenty one, breathing new life into a property once visited by Sigmund Freud and Arthur Schnitzler. She preserved the building’s quiet character while updating every detail for contemporary comfort. Chef Tomaž Fink now leads the kitchen, translating the surrounding landscape into refined plates that honor local traditions.
The kitchen divides its offerings between a structured tasting menu and a relaxed inn style card. Guests frequently order the porcini ravioli dressed in tomato vinegar reduction, followed by organic stream trout prepared with a classic butter sauce. The careful balance of these dishes recently earned the kitchen a fourteen point five rating from Gault&Millau. This disciplined method keeps the regional cooking grounded rather than overly ornate.
Deer antlers hang as chandeliers above antique wooden furniture, creating a quiet contrast with the modern paintings displayed on the walls. Evening service moves comfortably into the winter garden or the main lounge, where a crackling fireplace sets a steady pace. Afternoon hours bring freshly baked cakes from the onsite deli alongside soft background music. Guests can later unwind in the heated outdoor pool or visit the small private spa after dinner.
