The story

Siriuskogl Bad Ischl: Alpine Regional Cuisine with Global Flair

The Kitchen and Its Philosophy

Chef Christoph Held guides Siriuskogl in Bad Ischl through a flexible Austrian cuisine framework that quietly absorbs global techniques. His kitchen operates under the concept of boundless rootedness, pairing Salzkammergut ingredients with distant flavor profiles. Television personality Krauli has steered this hilltop operation for nearly two decades alongside service leader Markus Amtmann. Staff members maintain extensive pantry traditions alongside daily market runs, a disciplined routine that earned the Gault&Millau guide a twelve point rating last season.

Signature Plates and Seasonal Offerings

The menu balances straightforward comfort with seasonal experimentation across its standard and tasting options. Guests frequently order the venison burger patty, chickpea curry, or crispy battered cauliflower when browsing the regular list. Summer evenings bring the exclusive Turmdinner and a limited eight seat surprise menu that trades fixed recipes for spontaneous creativity. Dessert rounds out the progression with traditional plum jam pastries and rich chocolate soufflés, while the kitchen simultaneously prepares plant based alternatives that align with evolving Austrian cuisine standards.

The Mountain Setting and Dining Experience

Reaching Siriuskogl requires a steep fifteen minute walk from Bad Ischl, a deliberate detour that separates casual visitors from dedicated diners. The venue operates as a reliable gasthaus regardless of weather, accommodating both sweaty hikers and seated guests comfortably. Summer programming shifts focus toward elevated evening service, including the weekly Turmdinner and tightly booked surprise tastings. This layout keeps the kitchen focused on fresh ingredients while maintaining a distinctly grounded approach to regional cooking, allowing private events to seamlessly adopt the same seasonal menu structure.

The Siriuskogl is the city mountain of Bad Ischl. The restaurant also operates under this name and can be reached after a 15-minute ascent that becomes quite steep toward the end. The effort is worth it: Christoph “Krauli” Held and his young team present a relaxed blend of excursion tavern and gourmet restaurant. The dishes are as straightforward as they are expertly executed. Standard fare includes Bosna, burgers – featuring an excellent venison patty or a vegan option –, chickpea curry, or cauliflower in batter. To finish, you’ll enjoy Powidl-Pofesen and the “Schokohimmel.” Address: Sulzbach 70, 4820 Bad Ischl, Austria Contact: 0660 7346302, office@siriuskogl.at https://siriuskogl.at/ Opening Hours: Wed–Sun 10 AM–10 PM Team: Christoph Held (Chef), Markus Amtmann (Maître d')
