The story

Landhaus zu Appesbach in Sankt Wolfgang: Award-Winning Lakeside Dining

A century of lakeside traditions

Landhaus zu Appesbach in Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut anchors its identity in contemporary Austrian cuisine along the turquoise waters of the Wolfgangsee. The property has maintained its presence since the early twentieth century, drawing visitors who seek both tranquility and historical resonance. Guests frequently visit the Windsor Suite, named after King Edward VIII, who spent a month at this address in 1937 after stepping down from the British throne. The surrounding park and mountain backdrop frame every meal without demanding attention.

The chef and the kitchen

Chef Thomas Höfler directs the culinary program with an emphasis on seasonal precision and regional sourcing. The kitchen’s balanced approach earned a fourteen point rating from Gault&Millau, reflecting a steady commitment to technique. Dishes like ceviche made from Ausseer char served on artichoke highlight a willingness to pair local catch with crisp preparation. The menu shifts between bear garlic soup with traditional grammel knödel and succulent partridge breast accompanied by wild morels. Even the pastry work leans toward restrained sweetness, evident in a lightly tart coconut and passion fruit slice.

Dining spaces and seasonal service

Meals move between the main restaurant, an outdoor terrace, and a summer beachbar that extends the service window into late afternoon. This flexible layout supports the slow pace expected from lakeside Austrian cooking. The wine cellar carries a substantial selection known locally as the Bible, offering broad coverage across European appellations. Service runs daily with distinct windows for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, allowing guests to pace their visits around the water. Every setting prioritizes clear sightlines toward the lake rather than crowded tables.

A house with history, without a doubt. English King Edward VIII was exiled from his country. All of Europe's castles were open to him, yet he spent a month here. A majestic compliment. Today, you can still book the Windsor Suite. Those less interested in royalty will certainly appreciate the magnificent park and the lake along with the mountain scenery. The restaurant features an elegant country house style. The ceviche of Aussee char on artichoke impresses with its freshness, the mild-spicy note of the wild garlic soup with Grammelknödel pleases us just as much as the juicy partridge breast with morels. The gently fruity slice of coconut and passion fruit deserves top marks. The wine list is titled "Bible" and yes: it impresses with its extensive range and lavish prices.
