The story

Kleinsasserhof Review: Austrian Cooking Above Spittal an der Drau

The kitchen and its roots

Rising above the Drautal valley near Spittal an der Drau, the Kleinsasserhof has refined Austrian cuisine since the Gasser family acquired the historic estate in 1986. Chef Ludwig Gasser and sous chef Sara Gasser continue the transformation their parents started, treating every meal as part of a broader collage called Kleinsasserismus. Their approach balances experimental presentation with a firm anchor in regional suppliers. This consistent execution secured a 11.5 score from Gault&Millau in 2026.

Hearty plates and generous portions

Guests order substantial servings that favor comfort over culinary theatrics. The kitchen delivers a signature frittata soup straight from a wide ceramic bowl, followed by braised roast pork, veal loin steak, or hand-cut Carinthian noodles. Vegetarians receive a dense spinach lasagne or a rich polenta casserole prepared with locally sourced vegetables. Every dish demonstrates a clear focus on straightforward Austrian cooking, allowing seasonal produce to dictate the final flavor profile.

Eccentric decor and alpine views

The dining rooms function as a personal gallery where contemporary prints share wall space with vintage furniture and collected curiosities. A stone fireplace anchors the main seating area, while a dedicated wine cellar holds selections that pair neatly with the evening menu. Fourteen guest rooms remain available upstairs for travelers who wish to extend their visit past midnight. The interior design embraces playful clutter without sacrificing the quiet comfort of the surrounding pine forests.

What stands out here, high above the Drau Valley? The awe at the museum-like character of a house filled with art and kitsch down to the last square centimeter? Or the delight in down-to-earth, rustic home cooking, mostly served in (very) large portions? Alongside braised farmer's chicken (with rice that's too firm), juicy farmer's pork roast, Carinthian noodles, and veal back steak, vegetarians are also satisfied with polenta casserole or spinach lasagna. Everything is solidly prepared and served in a youthful, charming manner.
