The story

Albert Vienna: Seasonal Bistronomy in the Heart of Josefstadt

The Kitchen and Executive Chef

Albert in Vienna brings a refined approach to modern bistronomy, where seasonal ingredients meet relaxed neighborhood charm. Executive Chef Mario Bernatovic draws inspiration from culinary stations across Vienna, New York, and the Adriatic coast. His kitchen balances fine dining precision with casual accessibility, building menus around local produce and seasonal shifts. Gault&Millau recognized this execution with thirteen and a half stars, praising the consistent quality.

Seasonal Plates and Signature Sides

The rotating menu highlights regional harvests, including spring asparagus and autumn porcini mushrooms. Lovage gnocchi arrive with a precise texture, while choux dumplings filled with apricots from the restaurant’s own garden provide a sweet conclusion. Savory plates like beef tartare with jalapeño mayo attempt earthy flavors, though some preparations rely heavily on condiments. Vegetarian and vegan options remain central to this Austrian bistronomy framework.

Wine Selection and Evening Atmosphere

A handpicked natural wine program anchors the evening, featuring Austrian staples like Stefan Lang Grüner Veltliner and Oscar Szemes Glimmer alongside rare finds. Cocktails shift with the calendar, introducing autumn pear schnapps and basil yuzu juleps to match the seasons. The Josefstadt setting blends relaxed dining with curated art and live DJ sets during artist dinners. Guests move easily between shared plates and multi-course sequences without ever feeling rushed.

The establishment impresses with seasonal dishes such as asparagus, porcini mushrooms, and truffles. The chicken wings are excellently seasoned and leave you wanting more. The octopus poppers are crispy, although the black squid mayo – like in other dishes, such as the beef tartare with jalapeño mayo – is somewhat too dominant. Less would be more here, as the Vitello Funghatto also demonstrates: watery meat, tasteless truffle, and too much mayo. The lovage gnocchi impress with their perfect consistency, while the bacon in the pea purée could have been left out. The warm host and the choux pastry dumplings with apricots from their own garden provide a fitting conclusion and still make the establishment a cozy spot.
