The story

Bonka in Vienna: Timeless Austrian Cuisine in the Wienerwald

Generations of the Kitchen

Bonka stands as a steady reference point for Austrian cuisine just outside Vienna. The family has managed this establishment since 1855, originally operating as a working farm for visiting city guests. Herbert Bonka senior transformed the property into a recognized Lower Austrian inn during the 1970s by expanding the kitchen and constructing the dedicated dining rooms known today as the Extrazimmer and Room 30. His son inherited the business in 2011 and completed extensive renovations to prepare the venue for modern expectations while preserving the original structure.

Seasonal Menus and Signature Dishes

Critics awarded the venue a 13.5 score in the latest Gault&Millau guide, noting how the kitchen refines Wienerwald cooking by merging historical recipes with contemporary techniques. The menu relies heavily on fresh produce from nearby farms and occasionally from the family’s own fields. Appetizers frequently feature matjesfilet paired with a cucumber sorbet or a bear garlic panna cotta topped with cured ham hock. Hearty mains shift with the calendar, offering wild boar goulash enriched with juniper berries alongside traditional napkin dumplings.

The Dining Spaces and Grounds

Desserts complete the meal with comforting choices like apple and chocolate dumplings or a light carrot nut cake served with black forest cherry schnapps. Wine selections emphasize excellent value according to recent guide reviews. The interior layout separates quieter conversations from larger gatherings through distinct zones like the winter garden and the casual garden bar. Families regularly visit the grounds because the property maintains a small playground and a dedicated petting zoo for children.

Bonka has guaranteed good food in the Vienna Woods for over 160 years. Today, guests dine on dishes that skillfully combine tradition and modernity. To start, there is matjes fillet with cucumber sorbet, wild garlic panna cotta with ham hock, or beef soup with ham croquettes. Depending on the season, game dishes are also available: In our case, we were lucky enough to taste wild boar goulash – generously seasoned with juniper berries – and napkin dumplings. For vegetarians, the kitchen offers, for example, a cheese-leek strudel with yogurt sauce. Apple-chocolate dumplings or a fluffy carrot-nut cake – accompanied in our case by a coffee spiked with kirsch – round off a highly enjoyable meal. Excellent value for money, including the offered wines. Address: Oberkirchbach 61, 3413 Oberkirchbach, Austria. Contact: 02242 6290, wirtshaus@bonka.at, https://www.bonka.at/.
