The story

Edlingers-Tempel Vienna: Regional Wild Viennese Cuisine in a Hidden Courtyard

The Kitchen and Its Seasonal Rhythm

Edlingers-Tempel in Vienna operates a seasonal Viennese cuisine that refuses to follow a fixed calendar. Thomas Edlinger asks what the river, the forest, and the current month provide, then builds the daily plates around those answers. Every dish carries a specific geographic tag, tracing back to partner farms across the Waldviertel and Bluntautal.

Plates Rooted in the Local Larder

The menu shifts constantly, yet certain anchors remain reliable. Diners can order a classic Wiener Schnitzel crafted from hundred percent Austrian veal alongside a rare lamb Beuschel paired with a curd-cheese dumpling. Gault&Millau awarded this local kitchen twelve and a half points precisely because the execution never obscures its core ingredients.

The Courtyard and the Cellar

Guests step through an archway off the Praterstraße into a sheltered inner yard where potted greenery defines the summer seating. Sabine Edlinger manages the floor while Wolfgang Hetzel pours wines from familiar Austrian vintners. Service maintains a steady rhythm so the meal dictates the evening pace.

Visually, the restaurant on Praterstraße – somewhat tucked away in a courtyard with a beer garden – doesn’t necessarily resemble a temple, but it certainly earns its status as a temple of taste. Following a salad plate with duck gyoza, we enjoy blood sausage in parchment paper with onion purée and two desserts – we simply cannot decide between the strawberry mascarpone parfait and the chocolate mousse with peach. Everything is excellent! Business lunch is available from Tuesday to Saturday, also vegan upon request. Themed specials include Salzburg Week, Maibock Party, and Goose Dinner. Address: Praterstraße 12 (in the courtyard), 1020 Vienna, Austria. Contact: 01 214 01 79, office@edlingers-tempel.at, https://www.edlingers-tempel.at/. Opening Hours: Tue–Sat 11–15 and 18–23. Team: Thomas Edlinger, Chef Wolfgang Hetzel, Maitre d'.
