The story

GmoaKeller Vienna: Historic Tavern Cuisine Meets Modern Touches

A Neighborhood Legacy Reimagined

GmoaKeller in Vienna has built its reputation on Austrian tavern cuisine since 1858, when builder Anton Ölzelt erected the corner building that became a lasting community anchor. Generations of artists, musicians, and locals have shared tables within these walls. Chef Roland Wondrak now directs the kitchen, steering the menu through familiar regional formats while applying precise modern techniques. That steady commitment to quality earned the venue a score of eleven from Gault&Millau, acknowledging how the team preserves historical warmth without relying on nostalgia.

Signature Plates and Seasonal Rhythms

The kitchen applies this philosophy to classic Viennese cooking, starting with organic beef roulade wrapping around savory goose liver. The meat rests beside a smooth celery purée lightly dusted with black truffle. Autumn brings roasted Martinigansl paired with maroni red cabbage and two distinct dumpling varieties. Lighter days feature a rich ground beef soup finished with tender liver knödel, followed by baked veal liver served alongside a crisp mayonnaise salad. Simple desserts like pulled apple strudel and apricot crepes provide a clean finish.

Spaces Designed for Gathering

Multiple distinct rooms accommodate varying dining paces while retaining original architectural elements. The lower cellar vault offers a sheltered environment for larger parties, and the adjacent festival hall hosts private celebrations throughout the year. Sunlight floods the main dining floor during daylight hours, and the adjoining gastgarten extends seating outdoors when conditions allow. This flexible layout supports everything from quick weekday lunches to extended weekend dinners, keeping the service pace aligned with the building’s long-standing role as a hub for traditional tavern fare.

The roots of the GmoaKeller date back to the mid-19th century – and the restaurant’s ambiance embodies this with a traditionally charming atmosphere. True to its name, it naturally features a cellar vault that, along with the banquet hall, serves as an ideal venue for celebrations. The menu is rooted in traditional classics: beef soup with liver dumplings, Sacher sausages with horseradish, pan-fried veal liver with mayonnaise salad, wild zander fillet, and an excellent dessert selection ranging from apricot crepes to pulled apple strudel.
