The story
Huth Gastwirtschaft serves traditional Viennese cuisine at Schellinggasse 5 in Vienna. Gabriele and Robert Huth established the kitchen in 2001 to preserve the flavors of the old Austro-Hungarian era. Chef Karl Spenger leads the pass, relying on regional produce and time-tested techniques. Every dish follows a straightforward philosophy that values precise execution over unnecessary complexity.
The kitchen anchors its menu around time-honored Austrian plates. The Tafelspitz delivers tender boiled beef accompanied by root vegetables, creamy apple horseradish, and chive sauce. Diners often choose the Wiener Schnitzel, a thinly pounded veal escalope fried in clarified butter until it forms a crisp crust. The Backhendl offers fried chicken marinated in yogurt and lemon, while sweet finales arrive as freshly shredded Kaiserschmarrn with spiced plum compote or classic apple strudel. These selections prioritize authentic preparation over contemporary twists.
The dining room blends historic charm with clean, contemporary lines. Situated in the first district, the space offers a relaxed environment where wooden tables and soft lighting encourage unhurried meals. The open layout allows natural light to fill the room during daytime hours. This dedication to classical standards earned the kitchen a notable rating from Gault&Millau. Staff members maintain a steady pace that reflects the family ownership model, keeping the spirit of old Vienna alive through disciplined cooking and genuine hospitality.
