The story

Patara Restaurant Review: Refined Thai Dining in Central Vienna

The Name and the Kitchen

Patara delivers polished Thai cooking to a quiet corner of Vienna near Petersplatz. The restaurant honors its founder, Patara Sila-On, whose given name translates to graceful girl in Thailand. She built the dining room around a deep commitment to genuine hospitality. Souschef Mark Quillon now channels that same dedication into the daily prep, focusing on balanced spice levels and careful technique rather than heavy theatrics.

Flavors and Ingredients

Sourcing drives every plate here, with staff prioritizing Fair Trade goods and locally sourced organic vegetables whenever possible. That approach shines in the cassava chips served with rich peanut sauce, a starter praised for its precise crunch. The Thai kitchen also builds robust curries around the plant-based biosteak, letting earthy spices carry the flavor without masking the core ingredients. A recent Gault&Millau guide noted how well those components harmonize, awarding the venue twelve and a half points for its consistent execution.

The Garden Terrace and Daily Rhythm

Visitors typically settle onto the small outdoor patio to step away from the pedestrian traffic above. The space remains relaxed throughout the afternoon, especially during the weekly Thai set lunch that simplifies ordering for quick midday breaks. Ground floor tables welcome canine companions when announced ahead of time. Staff manage reservations efficiently, ensuring that spontaneous diners still find a seat without waiting long.

The garden of the Patara restaurant at Petersplatz is a little hidden gem for briefly escaping the hustle and bustle of the city center. The cassava chips with peanut sauce are an excellent start, perfectly seasoned and simply irresistibly crispy. The fish cakes are tender and aromatic. The biosteak with curry sauce is dreamy; the rich flavors harmonize so well that you wonder why this combination isn't served on plates more often. The crispy prawns are equally delicious, but due to their size, they are somewhat cumbersome to eat. The homemade lemonades are particularly refreshing. Those who drop by spontaneously are almost always lucky: the friendly service team always finds a table. Address: Petersplatz 1, 1010 Vienna, Austria.
