The story

Plachuttas Gasthaus zur Oper: Traditional Viennese Cuisine Across from the State Opera

The kitchen and its traditions

The kitchen at Plachuttas Gasthaus zur Oper anchors itself directly across from the Vienna State Opera while staying firmly rooted in Viennese cuisine. Gault & Millau awarded twelve points for precisely that grounded approach to everyday classics. The cooks treat time tested techniques as the foundation rather than a backdrop for fleeting trends.

Signature plates and seasonal choices

The most recognizable offering remains the original Wiener Schnitzel, prepared exclusively from the finest cut of veal. Patrons frequently order the Tafelspitz served in a traditional copper pot alongside bone broth and apple horseradish. Seasonal rotations introduce stuffed bell peppers in tomato sauce or chanterelle goulash paired with white bread dumplings. Desserts reflect the same dedication to honest Austrian cuisine, featuring house made Kaiserschmarrn tossed with plum compote.

The dining room and summer terrace

Modern furnishings blend quietly with established local traditions throughout the main dining space. Large windows frame the street outside while wooden tables accommodate both quick lunches and extended evening meals. A specially brewed lager from Vienna’s largest brewery complements the savory courses without overwhelming delicate palates. Summer visitors often prefer the expansive beer garden shaded by a heavy canvas awning.

If you visit the establishment’s website before heading to the restaurant, you’ll learn quite a bit about three things: the Vienna State Opera, Wiener Schnitzel, and the dishes served at the inn. Once you glance over this menu, you quickly realize: it hardly gets more Viennese than this. Schnitzel, roasted chicken, veal liver, or wild carp. All of them “look absolutely wonderful,” as Heinz Bösel would say. In all seriousness, the dishes are so heartily down-to-earth that it’s a pleasure. And the sauerkraut noodles too. Aunt Jolesch, just look! Anyone who wants to indulge in Viennese cuisine could hardly do better than at Plachutta’s Gasthaus zur Oper. Address: Walfischgasse 7, 1010 Vienna, Austria.
