The story

Unkai Japanese Restaurant Vienna | Gault&Millau 13.5 Rating

Precision in raw preparations

Unkai serves Japanese cuisine at Kärntner Ring 9 inside the Grand Hotel Wien, Vienna. A Gault&Millau score of 13.5 reflects the kitchen's enduring strength in raw fish preparations. The menu relies heavily on sushi and sashimi, where technical execution remains the standout feature. Other cooked components like tempura or grilled vegetables show more routine tendencies, yet the core offerings maintain a high standard.

Drinks and simple finishes

A considerable collection of champagne and sake sits available for guests. These drinks pair naturally with the Japanese preparations found across the menu. Visitors often select from the extensive list to accompany their meal. For dessert, the kitchen opts for reduced complexity; the sesame or matcha ice cream offers a reliable finish, steering clear of overly elaborate sweets.

Bamboo accents and hotel setting

The dining room blends plush furnishings with specific Japanese details such as bamboo screens. These elements create a distinct oasis within the Grand Hotel Wien's broader environment. The decor signals a focused culinary intent, separating the table service from the surrounding hotel pomp. This atmosphere supports the serious Japanese style maintained by the team.

High up in the Grand Hotel Vienna, sharp right past the plush opulence, immediately behind the bamboo arrangement, awaits a Japanese oasis. For many years, Unkai was considered Vienna's definitive high-end Japanese restaurant, but competition has intensified significantly in the meantime – and Unkai has slipped slightly. Little can be faulted with the sushi and sashimi, whereas the vegetable dishes, especially the tempura and grilled items, have become quite routine. Rather than opting for the sometimes unnecessarily elaborate desserts, it is better to choose the pleasantly understated sesame ice cream or the equally satisfying matcha ice cream. Points are awarded for the impressive champagne and sake selection. Address: Kärntner Ring 9, 1010 Vienna, Austria. Contact: 01 51 5 80 91 10. unkai@grandhotelwien.com. https://www.unkai.at/.
