The story

Wildling Vienna: Award-Winning Vegetarian Tapas on Laudongasse

The Kitchen and the Menu

Wildling serves vegetarian tapas in Vienna's Mariahilf district, presenting a menu where chef Georg Wolff prioritizes homemade and regional ingredients. The kitchen changes its lineup regularly to surprise diners with new combinations rather than relying on a fixed list. Guests receive a sequence of small plates designed for sharing, which allows the team to experiment with textures and techniques. This rotating format supports a creative approach to plant-based dishes without sacrificing structure.

Standout Preparations

The Gault&Millau guide highlights how this vegetarian cooking shines through specific compositions. Fried potatoes arrive with hollandaise sauce and black garlic, offering a rich flavor profile that anchors the meal. A bear garlic risotto made from pearl barley provides a creamy base, while bear garlic pasta parcels finished with sage butter add herbal notes. Desserts follow the same logic of balance, featuring a carrot cake paired with pumpkin seed nougat and fresh carrot ice cream that remains refreshing rather than cloying.

Drinks and Ambiance

The space maintains a relaxed pace, reinforced by service that feels warm and unpretentious. To pair with the savory bites, the staff prepares cocktails and serves a house-made raspberry and mandarin schnaps to every guest. These beverages offer brightness that cuts through the heavier elements of the tapas. The combination of casual energy and thoughtful drinks ensures the evening stays focused on the quality of the food.

You can always look forward to the food at Wildling – the menu changes regularly and surprises with ever-new creations. Served tapas-style, you can sample your way through the variety of mostly vegan and vegetarian bites. The fried potatoes with hollandaise and black garlic are particularly outstanding – truly exceptional, some of the best I've ever tasted! The wild garlic risotto made with pearl barley and the wild garlic dumplings with sage butter are also a dream. To crown the meal, the vegan carrot cake with pumpkin seed nougat and fresh carrot ice cream is delightful – not too sweet, but wonderfully refreshing. The relaxed atmosphere, warm service, and complimentary homemade raspberry-mandarin schnaps perfectly round off the evening.
