The story

Zwischenbrückenwirt Review: Traditional Austrian Cooking in Vienna

A traditional Viennese foundation

Zwischenbrückenwirt serves traditional Austrian cooking from an established location in Vienna’s twentieth district, keeping its culinary roots firmly planted in local gasthaus culture. The kitchen avoids heavy theatricality, instead focusing on honest preparation methods that highlight regional ingredients. This measured style earned a Gault&Millau rating for consistent execution. Diners seeking reliable comfort food will find a steady hand at the stove rather than experimental flourishes.

Seasonal plates and flavor pairings

The rotating menu follows available harvests, featuring dishes like Marchfelder Solo-Spargel dressed with a sharp peanut salsa. That combination stands out as one of the more inventive choices on the board. Hearty classics also anchor the service, particularly the backhuhn coated in toasted pumpkin seeds. The portion sizes run generous, though reviewers note the preparation leans toward familiar satisfaction rather than technical ambition.

Furnishings and beverage selection

Walking into the dining space reveals a layered design that balances vintage warmth with contemporary seating arrangements. Wood accents and period fixtures ground the room, while updated lighting keeps the atmosphere bright. Beverage offerings stay tightly curated, presenting a strictly Austrian wine list that complements the regional menu. Sweet finishes remain modest in number, allowing guests to choose from a focused collection of classic preparations.

At first glance an old Viennese tavern, at second glance surprisingly modern for such a place, and at third glance once again very rustic: this is the Zwischenbrückenwirt in Vienna's 20th district. We choose, quite traditionally, the deboned roast chicken in pumpkin seed coating – tasty and generous, but not exceptional. Creativity shines through, however, in the Marchfeld solo asparagus with spicy peanut salsa as an appetizer – a true taste experience! The purely Austrian wine list and the modest dessert selection keep things grounded.
