Mönichwalderhof Vorau: Austrian Cuisine & Gault&Millau Recognition

The kitchen and its guiding hand

At Mönichwalderhof in Vorau, Chef Bernd Konrath directs an Austrian kitchen where regional tradition meets disciplined technique. His seven-course tasting menu recently secured a 14.5 rating from Gault&Millau, a score that reflects careful plating rather than heavy sauce work. Guests seated for the Thursday through Saturday service will encounter dishes built around seasonal produce and straightforward methods. The culinary team treats local ingredients as the foundation, then applies precision to finish them cleanly.

Plates built around the harvest

The tasting itinerary highlights steamed turbot served alongside toasted buckwheat, while a roasted quail course arrives paired with celeriac purée and shaved fennel. Langoustines appear with braised kohlrabi, offering a sweet contrast to the earthy root vegetable. Heavier plates ground the progression, including slow-braised veal resting beside baby carrots and new potatoes. Sweet endings arrive without fuss, typically featuring house-made Kaiserschmarrn with poached apricots or traditional ger knödel topped with walnuts and cinnamon sugar.

A family house rooted in the valley

The current owners, the Radits and Konrath families, have managed the property since 1927, preserving a building that originally functioned as a village bakery and mill. Its position along the Steierische Blumenstraße places guests inside a quiet corner of the Joglland, far from rushed traffic. Staff greet visitors with elderflower sparkling wine poured directly into chilled glasses, setting a measured pace for the evening. Wooden tables and simple linens keep the focus on conversation and the slow unfolding of the meal.

Even Maria Theresa was captivated by the Joglland region, and today the area remains a paradise for those who want to relax. As is well known, good food also helps when slowing down, and the Mönichwalderhof is a highly recommended spot. The gourmet tasting menu, offered on request from Thursday to Saturday, contributes significantly to this experience. Depending on your preference, up to seven courses are lovingly and masterfully prepared by head chef Bernd Konrath, who skillfully combines regional and international specialties. Highlights include turbot with buckwheat, quail with celery, or a langoustine with kohlrabi. The veal with potatoes and baby carrots offers a cozy, traditional touch. The beverage pairing consists mainly of Styrian wines.
