The story
Perched in the tranquil Windautal valley, Gasthaus Steinberg has been a labour of love for the Grafl family since around 1930. What began alongside wood trading and hunting slowly grew into a cosy guesthouse, welcoming locals and travellers alike. Today, the fourth generation – Agata and Michael Grafl – carries that legacy forward. The inn has evolved through the decades, but the founding values of hospitality, warmth, and a deep connection to the land remain unchanged.
Chef Michael, described by the team as a “kitchen artist and hobby gardener,” puts regionality and homemade produce at the centre of his cooking. Fresh ingredients from the garden and the surrounding Tyrolean landscape define his Austrian cuisine. The menu changes with the seasons, featuring daily specials that highlight what is best at that moment. For those seeking a deeper experience, a degustation menu is available on request – a chance to taste the full breadth of Michael’s craft.
Agata, the “good fairy of the house,” ensures every guest feels welcomed from the moment they arrive, and she is also responsible for the carefully selected wines that accompany the meal.
Gasthaus Steinberg’s commitment to honest, flavourful cooking has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026 – a recognition that speaks to the quiet excellence of this family-run inn. The atmosphere is one of genuine Alpine serenity: a place where children can play on the large playground by the stream, hikers and bikers can refuel, and skiers can step straight out onto the slopes in winter. Yet the kitchen remains the heart of the house, turning out robust Austrian dishes with a personal, seasonal touch.
Whether you stop in for lunch after a walk or settle in for a multi-course dinner, Gasthaus Steinberg offers a taste of Tyrolean tradition that feels both timeless and sincerely personal.
