The story

Bergpfeffer Windischgarsten: Traditional Austrian Cooking with Alpine Views

The kitchen and its approach

Bergpfeffer in Windischgarsten grounds its Alpine cuisine in seasonal ingredients and straightforward preparation. Chef Andreas Eder directs daily operations while blending classic Central European techniques with light Mediterranean touches. Pastry chef Susanne Eder oversees all baked goods to maintain consistent quality across the menu. This disciplined approach to regional cuisine secured a 11.5 point assessment from Gault&Millau for the current season.

Standout dishes on the plate

Service begins with cleanly dressed carpaccio or a clear beef soup before transitioning to heavier mains. The kitchen prepares a Wiener schnitzel with careful breading control and serves pan fried trout alongside hazelnut butter and parsley potatoes. Medium rare backsteaks provide a leaner alternative for regular visitors. House made pastries cap the meal, with a traditional apple strudel delivering steady quality without excessive sweetness.

The room and mountain views

Wooden furnishings and elegant detailing create a comfortable interior for families and small groups. Wide windows frame the Stodertal valley, directing sightlines toward the surrounding peaks during both midday and evening service. An outdoor terrace expands the dining capacity into the mountain air when temperatures allow. The property traces its roots to a modest woodcutter lodge and now operates as a reliable gathering spot for residents and travelers alike.
