The story
De Kunst operates as a relaxed bistro in Ghent, built on the Dutch hospitality traditions of founders Ynze Van Hoek and Sebastian Vos. The pair arrived from Amsterdam after years of managing neighborhood cafés, eventually expanding their vision into this hybrid space that blends a restaurant, bar, and creative studio. They deliberately removed rigid service protocols to prioritize straightforward cooking and unhurried conversation. That commitment to honest dining caught the attention of Le Fooding, which listed the venue in its 2026 guide for championing everyday pleasure.
Visitors navigate through brick walls and wooden paneling to reach the central courtyard, where a sprawling mural anchors the room. Portuguese cement tiles cover portions of the floor while an old fireplace sits beside mismatched school desks and hanging filament bulbs. Potted plants soften the edges of the outdoor seating area, creating a backdrop that feels more like a private garden than a commercial venue. The layout encourages guests to take their time, matching the founders’ belief that meals should unfold without pressure.
The kitchen relies on dedicated regional suppliers instead of rigid menus. Fresh sourdough arrives baked with flour from the De Zwalmmolen mill, accompanied by slow caramelized onions and aged cheeses from Het Hinkelspel. Main courses feature butter-basted steak served alongside vibrant chimichurri, or pan-fried haddock resting on yellow beetroot and a rich saffron reduction. Every plate includes crinkle-cut fries and house-made mayonnaise, reinforcing the bistro’s dedication to familiar flavors executed with care.
