The story

Golden Gai in Gent: A Guide to Award-Winning Japanese Dining

The team behind the counter

Golden Gai in Gent serves focused Japanese cuisine through the daily coordination of Robin Van de Lanotte, Jesse Den Dulk, Laura Dekeyser, and Anjana Dierckx. This Japanese kitchen runs a compact space that prioritizes precise seasoning over elaborate plating. You will notice how they balance rich umami broths with sharp acidic accents across every plate. This streamlined approach allows the window to move steadily despite refusing advance bookings.

Noodles and small plates

The rotating menu features five distinct ramen styles alongside four bite-sized starters built for easy sharing. Patrons often begin with miso glazed chicken wings that develop a crisp exterior before yielding to tender meat. The spicy pork Tantan Ramen arrives with house fermented kimchi and marinated eggs, while guests seeking lighter textures can request soaked kelp noodles instead of standard wheat. Sweet finishes typically alternate between a dense matcha cheesecake and a dairy-free chocolate tart.

Space and seasonal rhythm

A recent listing from Le Fooding reflects how consistently this neighborhood spot handles high volume without sacrificing quality. A glossy red bar anchors the interior while mustard yellow tables provide a bright foundation for quiet evenings. Warmer months shift activity onto the paved terrace where diners eat under open sky. The straightforward layout keeps sightlines clear and conversation relaxed.

The foursome Robin Van de Lanotte, Jesse Den Dulk, Laura Dekeyser and Anjana Dierckx take you on a one-way trip to Japan with the bigger, older brother of Astro Boy. While Golden Gai (a bright red bar, yellow tables) doesn’t take reservations, you’ll never wait too long, and the menu impresses with its mouthwatering Japanese gems: take your pick of four bite-sized appetizers, five ramen options and two desserts. The night we went, we opted for: some incredibly tender miso teriyaki chicken wings; the spicy pork Tantan Ramen with homemade kimchi and marinated eggs – you can even switch up the plain noodles for kelp noodles, if you prefer; and to finish, it’s a toss-up between the matcha cheesecake or the vegan chocolate tart. When the sun’s out, slurp up some noodles on the terrace – simple pleasures, and all. //
