The story
Kraz Gent brings its signature Breton cooking to a quiet corner of Ghent. Owners Ellen Maeyens and Eli De Heem drew inspiration from years of culinary travel, turning those collected flavors into a seasonal menu built around local suppliers. Their kitchen focuses on buckwheat galettes prepared using a gluten-free and lactose-free batter, keeping the preparation accessible without sacrificing texture. The space itself blends traditional warmth with an industrial edge, softened by lush greenery that makes the room feel grounded rather than staged.
The menu rotates through crisp savory galettes alongside lighter tapas and daily bistro suggestions. A classic Complète pairs Pas de Rouge cheese from Het Hinkelspel with cured ham, a runny egg, and fresh herbs, while a Saumon version layers gravlax, apple, cream, and dill. Sweet finishes lean heavily into regional baking traditions, featuring salted butter caramel with almonds or a saffron cardamom butter served with pistachios and orange blossom water. Every dish follows the same rule: let the Breton cooking shine through honest technique and reliable produce.
Beverage choices mirror the food’s origins and the local craft scene. Guests commonly order Normandische cider poured from the barrel alongside house-made aperitifs like the Calv Sour or Norman Negroni. A curated selection of Belgian beers ranges from hoppy blondes to complex lambieks, complementing the casual yet refined dining rhythm. Recognition from Le Fooding arrived as a natural response to this consistent approach, validating a kitchen that prioritizes straightforward flavor over theatrical presentation.
